Saul Leiter
The photo's of Saul Leiter really opened my eyes to the range of compositions that can be created using everyday objects and techniques. Leiter's work highlights his skilful application of his ability to observe as not everyone can apply this skill through photography effectively. Reflections were a key component of Leiter's work. For example in the photograph to the right the posters on the window appear to be overlaid on top of the figure of the woman when in fact the photo is the result of the woman's reflection in the same position of the adverts in the windows. The careful positioning of the woman's hands being framed by the adverts gives us more reason to be swayed into believing that the image has been photoshopped as opposed to being taken first hand.
(Photo taken earlier this year at the Saul Leiter Exhibition at the Photographer's Gallery)
This image of Leiter's would probably be my favourite in that he uses a fault of science to to create a masterpiece. Condensation on a window usually disallows the view of the rear side of the window. Leiter uses this inconvenience to his advantage allowing the clear part of the window presumably created by rubbing his hand against the window to accentuate and highlight the most important part of his image. The drips of the condensation add to creating a partial view of the man through the window. The dominant colour yellow around the mans head is effecting in the sense that the image is essentially grayscale so the colour catches ur eye drawing maximum attention to the man.
