Front Page

I have decided to use the colour red on the front cover because the connotations are power,  strength, passion and desire. All words that are linked to the title of the magazine ‘immune’. In this sense, the word immune defines being resistant to anything inhibiting freedom. It took me a while to decide on the font of the title but I chose this one because of its sharp nature. I feel like it matches the snappy-ness of the title. I chose to have a red full stop because of the connotations for red described above but also because A full stop marks the end of a sentence. While sentences don’t usually have one word in them, in this case, rules are broken because of the power of the word. I have chosen this image to go n the front because of its intimidating nature. Both girls are making eye contact automatically engaging its audience.

PAGE 1&2

I Chose to open the magazine with my definition of freedom in hope of setting the tone and theme. Because I have chosen not to use a contents page (because I didn't want people to skip pick and choose what they read, rather follow it through like lKEA) I had to let people know what kind of stuff they would be reading. I kept the page simple again using the bold red colour to enhance the importance and power of the statement.

PAGE 12-15

The purpose of this double spread was to allow people to reflect on themselves in terms of helping them to be free in terms of any fears they may have. Looking back now it seems a bit early in the magazine to be suggesting that people fill out the questionnaire but I guess people can always come back to it if they want to. The dotted line near the page center was put there so that readers can cut or rip the questionnaire out if they would prefer their responses to be private. I included questionnaires to increase the interactivity of the magazine. the quote o the back of the questionnaire would obviously come with it but it links because it suggests that perhaps people cling to the things i.e fears because they'd rather feel the pain in the familiarity of the fear than the peace in what its like to live without the fear. The photo beside the quote on page 14 links because of the strip covering the eyes of the model and the fact that the girls are clinging to each other mirroring the words of the quote. I think the coolest part about the way I organized these pages is that if the questionnaire page is ripped out the image and the quote on the pages that are left still link together. Fear is suggested in the photo of the girl in yellow because her eyes are closed and it's almost like the girl whose face can't be seen is leading the girl with her eyes covered. This Suggests the girl with her eyes covered could currently be experiencing fear.

This quote was put in because it was the quote from which the questionnaires were based off. I decided to put it here not at the beginning or the end because I wanted the readers to see the questionnaire responses for themselves without any understanding of the kind of random questions within. I didn't want o put it at the end because, in my opinion, it was better for them to also relate the quote to the questionnaire responses as well enabling the quote to sink in. This s a quote that I live by which is why I based the questionnaire on it. I a couple people what they thought of the questionnaire But one particular response from my cousin was that "it makes people sit down and think about their life and whether they are living it to the full".

GENERAL

I chose to have the page numbers diagonal because I just wanted to switch it up a bit. I tried having the numbers upside down, rotated 90 degrees, 270 by t preferred it when they were rotated just 45 degrees I feel like it might annoy people but I don't mind as long as it provokes an opinion. I chose to have a different colour scheme for different articles and the same red colour background for all the quotes because I wanted the colour to be a huge theme within the magazine. I love the colour and wanted this to be represented. My favour colour is green and I feel like without it I could live I have an emotional attachment that will stay with me forever. after researching into colours and their connotations I chose accordingly for each article. For example on page 44 and 45, I chose to have orange .he connotations of Orange are joy, encouragement and stimulation. The words are related to the article because I wanted to encourage people that it is possible to overcome insecurities and that great joy will be radiated into your life. Another example is on pages 34 - 39  (about Yemsxoclothing) I have used the colour blue which connotes expertise and faith! Sometimes I wish the font size on of the page numbers was a bit thicker because some times they get lost in the coloured backgrounds. the current thickness is Thin perhaps if I had made it light it wold have been better. but I guess page numbers aren't that important anyway.

Pages 50 & 51

Tim once said to me that he thinks that the page is too full and that perhaps I should have one photo. I did think about making the photographs smaller but then a lot of people told me that the photograph looks like the two photos are of two different girls. This was not the reaction I was expecting but it was interesting to here because I guess then people want to read the article to find out why there are two pictures of two different girls that look kind of alike on the page. Then when people finally do read it the will think Ohh!! I see they aren't different people after all.

IF I HAD MORE TIME.

If I had more time I would have written more article about/relating to black boys, because the magazine was meant to be addressed to both young black boys/men and girls/women.

I would have made sure I had researched a number of pages were necessary for publication to be printed without blank pages at the back.

I would have Put some bits on the front cover 'staring

Confz

' and his journey into the music industry' little things that

woyuld

invite people to read the magazine more.

I would have credited the photographer and written where each of the clothes was from.

I would have remembered to cut slits on the pages with the optional rip out questionnaire pages.

COMPARING MOCK UP MAGAZINES

PAGE 6-9

I have included this article because what I have written about has been on my mind for quite a while. I felt like this was the right place to address it. Being a part of the younger black generation I'm living in the moment so I felt that it was appropriate for me to speak on what I observe, put forward alternative opinions and give an anecdotal story for people to relate to. Originally I was going to have a page entitle dear Brown Boys as well because The magazine was meant for young black youths and adults. But Due to not being able to shoot and interview the model I had to let go of that Idea and re-appropriate my choice of audience.

PAGE 10 &11

This quote was put on the previous page about confidence in dress sense because IT is an encouraging quote about encouraging you to be the explicit version of yourself. If you read it you'll realise that it's not about dress sense but by placing after the article about dress sense you kind of end up linking it to dress sense by accident. The photo i have placed with it wasoriginally supposed to be about how these two girls define freedom. I did send them the questionnaire to reply to but due to a lack of response from them (I believe there were some technical issues regarding email), I had to make the decision of placing the photos in other places which were appropriate. I feel like the photo here works though because They are dressed in a funky 90s way which supports the quote beside the photo.

PAGE 16-17

Originally I had the interview with Confz on the left page and the screenshot of his questionnaire on the right page. I swapped this over because I felt that jumping straight into the interview was a bit weird. Obviously, I know him so I wouldn't need an introduction to who he is and stuff but from the audience need an introduction to who he is and stuff but from the audience perspective, this wouldn't have been the case. By putting the questionnaire questions first the audience can get to know who Confz is first before. I forgot to put his @name and the name of his most recent songs and stuff in the magazine because they can be found on social media and Itunes but in case you were wondering his twitter is: @ItsJustCONFZ and his Instagram is @Confz. I should have asked hi why he goes by the name of COnfz that would have been a good question but i didn't think to.

Page 26-27

I like how big the screenshot is on this page its inviting due to its large scale and legibility. I did it like this because it was too long to fit vertically on the page but it looks better in my opinion.

Page 30-31

I chose to have the font almost illegible on the page to mirror the words that were written. The words are almost lost in the background meaning you have to delve deeper into the photo to actual read it. SImillarly through this image i, am encouraging people to delve deeper into themselves in hope of finding true freedom.

Thought I would add some humor to the end of the magazine. I always try to make my work entertaining because I know that I wouldn't want to read stuff that's boring and doesn't make me chuckle, even once. I like the minimal effect I have used with the text on the facing page beside and chose the joke because it corresponds well with the photo. I like the fact that I have repeated the use of this model because It keeps the running theme that you should dress who u are regardless of where you are going or in this case regardless of what page you are on. I guess I could have got her to change outfits and this would have enforced this even more but I think they way I have done it works as well.

PAGES 46 - 49

On the first copy, I printed at ABC (3rd mock up)  The sign that says 'STOP HOLDING ONTO YOUR PAST' was blurry. the resolution wasn't high enough for the size of the picture so I made it smaller on the final print. The photo next to it pf the hand on the 3rd draft is too in focus compared to the front of the hand on the following page. I also feel that it is too big for the scale of themagazine/. Also because the text size generally is thin the photo becomes too dominant in the mazine. I have chosen to reduce the size of the hand for the final print.  I feel that the hand look quite 3d and actually looks like a hand is going to the page. The hand works next to each both these quotes because on page 46 it says stop holding onto your past and the hand is grabbing the page and on the following page, the quote talks about not letting things out and hold you back. Which is what the other side of the hand demonstrates.

BACK PAGE

I chose to have the same font as the title of the magazine on the back cover because I wanted to keep the consistency. I wanted my magazine to recognisable from both the front and the back. I chose to have this kind of slang text on the back so it would be a sort of puzzle for people to ponder on. A lot of people I first showed it to didn't get it. At first, i thought ahh that's annoying I've printed it now. but I feel like it will be on the back of people's minds for a while until it suddenly clicks. Incas you couldn't work it out either (lol) It means Be free. The big front is eye catching and you automatically ready it without trying to which is the intention. I decided to have the asterisk so that people are drawn to the back cover because of the big font and then have to go closer to read the small print. I chose to write 'this is not easy but it is possible' because I had previously featured this line in at the beginning of the magazine. I wanted to repeat it because it is a basic phrase that means so much. It has no deeper meanings it means what I say but it effortlessly and simply just enforces that if you want to do something i.e be free there is always a way it may be tough but if you try you will achieve and it will be rewarding. I chose the minimalist format because I wanted to entice the readers in case they found the magazine backwards but I didn't want to distract from the front cover. I also just wanted to use it as a soft and simple reminder to be free.
